Kinder-2nd grade Physical Education

Course Description

PE for lower grade elementary students should be fun, exciting and fast-paced.  If you were to come in and watch one of our classes, you would most likely see my students stretch, followed by a few minutes of cardiovascular activities such as running, mixed with muscular strength movements such as burpees and push ups.  Once our entire "warm up" is complete, we move into the main focus of our lesson and typically end with a game related to our lesson focus.  Much of our time during Quarter 1 is spent learning basic locomotor movements and coordination.  As the kids begin to pick up on those skills and become more in tune with their body movements, I begin introducing basic sports skills such as soccer and basketball fundamentals.  Although athletics and team sports are a big part of any PE curriculum, I feel very strongly that students need to see other avenues of physical fitness.  Every year I try to do some sort of dance unit as well as group fitness such as cardio kickboxing.  Overall, the most important goal is to find at least one activity that each student connects with and truly enjoys in order to encourage them to continue moving their bodies as they get older.
