3rd and 4th Grade PE

Course Description

PE for 3rd and 4th grade should feel more challenging for the students.  PE for my younger students is focused on finding balance and coordination with their bodies, as well as basic fundamentals of a few different sports.  For 3rd and 4th grade, these students are more self-aware and can move their bodies in more complex ways.  For that reason, we are able to dive deeper into harder skills within sports such as soccer, basketball and volleyball.  If you were to come in and watch one of our classes, you would most likely see my students stretch, followed by a few minutes of cardiovascular activities such as running, mixed with muscular strength movements such as burpees and push ups.  Once our entire "warm up" is complete, we move into the main focus of our lesson and typically end with a game related to our lesson focus.  One big focus of ours during Quarter 1 is FitnessGram.  FitnessGram is a set of health-related physical fitness tests based on scientific data of students around the country.  I typically test my students once in the fall, once in the winter, and one last time in the spring.  If you want to know more information regarding FitnessGram you can visit their website at http://www.cooperinstitute.org/fitnessgram.  Following FitnessGram, I try to dive into our various team sports.  Although athletics and team sports are a big part of any PE curriculum, I feel very strongly that students need to see other avenues of physical fitness.  Every year I try to do some sort of dance unit as well as group fitness such as cardio kickboxing.  Overall, the most important goal is to find at least one activity that each student connects with and truly enjoys in order to encourage them to continue moving their bodies as they get older.
